Text

Some of the texts used in the various courses include the following:

Photography Text

Photography, by London, Stone and Upton.  You are responsible and required to complete the assigned readings.  There are copies available for in-class use in the Photography Lab as well as on Reserve at the library.  While you are not required to purchase the text, it is strongly recommended for those students who may wish to take future classes at Grossmont.  Readings from this text are used primarily in PHOT 150, 151, 152, 159, and 165.

PhotoshopBooks

Adobe Photoshop for Photographers by Martin Evening for digital photography technical support.  Readings from this text are used primarily in PHOT 150, 151, 152, 159, 165, 167, 256, 259, and 265.

Photo_Wells

Photography – A Critical Introduction by Liz Wells.  Readings from this text are used primarily in PHOT 167, 267 and other intermediate photography courses depending on topics being discussed.

In addition to the above texts, various essays found on the course website, online, copied or found in books may also be assigned.

Camera

Cameras

Access to an analog SLR with manual focus and adjustable shutter / aperture controls (Auto-function cameras (focus/exposure) acceptable with manual override)

Depending on the course enrolled in, any combination of analog and/or digital cameras, including small-format analog and digital cameras, point and shoot, cell phone cameras, medium-format cameras as well as a large-format camera (successful completion of PHOT 152 – Photography III necessary) may be used for any of the assignments and final project.

Black & White analog printing paper must be variable contrast, fiber base, double-weight and glossy surface only from the following brands:  Ilford Multigrade

RA4paper

Color analog printing paper (RA-4) can include the following brands: Fujicolor Crystal Archive (glossy, matte, lustre) and/or Kodak Endura (glossy (f), matte (n), luster (e))

Matt Board

White, non-textured matt board only (2 ply and/or 4 ply)

Will also need dry mounting tissue if dry-mounting technique is used

As assigned and only if submitting 8” x 10” or 8-1/2” x 11” photographic prints for completion of Final Portfolio

Photographic Lab Practice

Concurrent enrollment in PHOT 159 A | B | C | D – Photography Lab Practice and/or PHOT 259 A | B | C | D – Advanced Photography Lab Practice is highly recommended to secure additional darkroom lab time for film processing, printing, and print finishing.  This is a one-unit, credit/no credit course offered on Fridays and Saturdays. During the first two weeks of the semester, you must attend one of the lab sections with proof of registration as well as participate in a darkroom orientation in order to receive a lab card.
