We are at an exceptional time for photography as the art world embraces the photograph as never before and photographers consider the art gallery or book as the natural home for their work. Throughout the history of photography there have always been promoters of the medium as an art form and vehicle for ideas alongside painting and sculpture, but never as many or as vocal as there are today. To identify ‘art’ as the preferred territory for their images is now the aspiration of many photographers.

- from the Introduction in The Photograph as Contemporary Art by Charlotte Cotton, Photography Department Head and Curator of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Today, photographers and photography are exploring various conceptual, aesthetic and technical strategies within a contemporary art context, including constructing scenes and narratives to suggest fictional stories, the use of photography as a means of documenting performance and as a visual strategy for exploring personal, social and/or cultural norms and values within our prevalent lens culture. The role and function of old and new aesthetic and technical strategies with photography, including the use of color, 19th century photographic techniques, alternative processes, installation and sculpture, video and digital imaging, have profoundly expanded the language of photography as well as the conceptual and visual possibilities for photographers.
